What: Write-In Schaumburg Public Library (the central, or main library, on Roselle Road)

When: Saturday November 13

Time: 10AM (when the library opens) until 4pm (the library closes at 5pm).

Who: Hosted by Steve (cooldoctor1) and Tom (tomster). Naperville Nanowrimo’ers who are in the area of Schaumburg (also will post in the Elsewhere in Illinois Forum).

Why? Because mid-month, we’re going to need a whole lotta motivation to keep the embers going. A communal six hours planted in a seat clicking away to catch up on our word counts. Really a work session. Everyone invited… even drop in during late morning or afternoon. There is a Caribou Coffee and (I think) other places within walking distance. Free parking in the lot. I am reserving an EXTENSION ROOM, which is what it’s called and should have room for a dozen people or so. We can overflow if needed into the main library. Ask when you get there, or message me and I will give you my cell. Bring power strips/cords if you wish to have power for your laptops. Anyone interested in timed writing drills and such, we’ll give them a try. Very casual. Very informal. Very productive. Here’s a link to the library website, including a clickable map. (It's the main library, on the left--central library).

See you there!!! :0-)

Steve and Tom,

Thank you so much for hosting the write in. It was my first time at a write in and I was so much more productive than I would have been at home, even with the occasional pauses to chat (though for me I think those chats actually spurred creativity, because I don't get to talk about writing all that often otherwise.)

I didn't think much of the 15 minute writing drill as I was doing it or immediately afterwards, but when I got home and re-read what I wrote, I found that actually it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was. I did a little editing, but actually kept about 85-90%. What that tells me is that if I really fall behind, sprinting can get me past the finish line and it may not even be utter nonsense.

I didn't quite reach my goal of 4-5K yesterday, but I managed to find time to write today and reached the halfway mark a day ahead of time - woo hoo! 16 days and another 25K words to go! Hope the rest of the weekend was as productive for both of you and Laura too!

Liz

Glad to hear the write-in was so productive! I did the best I could...I was trapped at work for 17 hours, but I took every free moment to jot a line or twelve onto a piece of paper I kept in my pocket. By the end of the shift, I'd written 2,654 words!

So...I'm considering myself a "participant in spirit." It's 9am and I just got home an hour ago...going to take a nap, then get back to it! My goal is to finish in 7 more days, then have time to make revisions before November 30.

--Beth

P.S. I've found that "sprints" are the best way for me to write. I've even gotten to the point of punishing myself for not achieving high word counts. I've found that I can easily exceed 1,000 words in 30 minutes, so I use that as my base. If I don't make 500 words in 15 minutes, 250 words in 7 minutes, etc, I have to do some chore I generally put off. It definitely limits the time I sit staring at the screen, thinking about writing.

My bathroom is suddenly really clean. The kitchen is getting there. :)

A great write-in with four of us making substantial progress. Really keen to have first three hours at SPL, then got booted out of room and shimmied over to Caribou Coffee for more hijinx. Laura, Liz, Tom and I honestly had a fun and productive time.

Thanks for the offer for a word war, Katherine. We did one for 15 minutes and each only wrote 450-500 words. And pure nonsense the writing quality was, let me tell you.

I would do jabber, but after trying unsuccessfully for 15 min on one occasion and 45 min on another this past Monday, even after getting the password from Tim and downloading both pidgin and exodus, I never was able to get on, not once. Oh, well/

Tim and you can show me in person sometime, I'll bring my laptop. (someone should make a quick video of it, because it's not easy, from what I've heard. Very fickle). But no problem, I'm likely much better just duking it out and shadowboxing myself as I am a slow writer and typist. But I do wonder how fast I could go with my Dragon Naturally Speaking. --Steve

Good luck. I'll be watching your progress with worms down my throat (baited breath, but two extra words).

If you're flagging at some point, shoot me a private message (or an email) and I'll log onto jabber chat and challenge you to a word war or two. My plans for the day are write at home, walk, write at Caribou, walk (if not raining), write at home, a Skype call with the one non-writer in my immediate family, then write at home....

well, for what it's worth, I will be joining you for at least a part of the day. I've never done a write-in before, so I don't really know how they work, but for some reason I can't seem to write at home on the weekends, so I'm hoping this will help me finally get a little ahead of the game. If I can crank out 4-6K words tomorrow I will be very happy. Anything more than that would be spectacular.

Hi Tom--- My wife made us two signs, she's a cardmaker by hobby, so they're pretty keen.

So, you can save the crayon for novel writing. LOL

See you tomorrow. Looks like we'll have a huge turnout, hope the room is big enough. Not!

I'm ready to write--

You're right Steve!

You covered the bases. I'll have a powerstrip or two and perhaps an extention cord, so we'll have plenty of power.
If I get really adventurous I'll even print up a sign. If I'm lazy it'll be in crayon.

Looking forward to a really great day!

I just wanted to re-post this write-in for this Saturday, Tom and I spoke by phone tonight, and we'll both be there with bells on, ready to write. Six hours is a long stretch, so it'd be nice to have some company, anytime you can drop in. Note: mapquest Naperville to Schaumburg via I-355 is only 27 miles. Not bad distance for a six hour write-in.

Note that the Extension Room (just ask at front desk, and I have a NanoWriMo sign to post on the door and in the room) is officially ours from 10AM to 1PM (three hours); because of other events in the library that day, we may need to seek other writing within the library after 1pm, anyone can NanoMail me or Tomster for our numbers if you'd like it t call if you think you are coming after 1pm.

There is a Caribou Coffee one block away walking, so if no space in Library after 1PM, or if we need a jolt of Java, we may be there. Again, NanoMail me or Tomster for our numbers.

Post if any questions. I think I covered it all, right Tom? ---- STeve
