Duel Trains returns to NaperWriMo onSaturday, November 3rd.
One train full of Nano writers leaves Downers Grove (Fairview Ave) station at 10:47am and another leaves Glen Ellyn at 11:00am. Which train of writers will have the most words written by the time they reach Chicago and claim the Dueling Trains trophy?
Please RSVP to this thread to let us know you're coming and which train you will be taking.
Jenny (GwenTolios) will be leading the Downers Grove writers (Total: 6-7):
Squiddish - Aurora
Tim/NewMexicoKid and possibly Kathleen 2.0 - Naperville (10:33 AM)
If you want to get on the train at one of the earlier or later stops on the two train stops, no worries. Contact your train route lead to work out meet up arrangements.
We'll arrive in Chicago around noon and head to Sawada Coffee/Green Streets Smoked Meats in the West Loop for lunch, coffee, and more writing. (These two establishments share the same building.) Please join us there if the Downers Grove or Glen Ellyn routes are not convenient.
We'll write until 4:00before walking back to the train stations for the 4:40 trains returning to Downers Grove (Fairview Ave) and Glen Ellyn.
The walk from the train stations (Ogilvie and Union)to the West Loop is a little over 1/2mile.
I'm definitely interested, and I have the time--I would be getting on the Glen Ellyn train, but I'd be getting on at Lombard, not Glen Ellyn. Assuming some meet-up plan can be arranged, I'm in!
Yes, we'll be syncing up on where to meet on the train. We'll determine who is getting on each train route first and have them update the forum with which train car they are on.
For the Glen Ellyn route, I will be the lead can inform folks via the phone. You can contact me at 630 267-5589, I'll let you know where we are.
If we don't meet up on the train, we'll pick a spot in the train station to meet at.
Dont know if my message just now counted as an RSVP. I will probably be babysitting grandkids in Glen Ellyn Friday nite, so, despite living in the Loop, may take 11:00 Glen Ellyn write in train back
Sa-weet! Glad so many people are excited to attend!
I'll be embarking from Fairview/Downers to kick off the dueling portion of the day. For those of you getting on prior, please keep me informed of what car you're in if possible! That way we can join you. Call/Text at 734.377.8239 via actual phone or WhatsApp. Otherwise, FB message me.
Last year the Glen Ellyn / Union Pacific West line won. I refuse to let that happen twice in a row!
For those who want to join in at Naperville but have no experience with riding the trains, you can park in the north lot for free on weekends. Go through the tunnel (via stairs or ramp) to get to the south track. The ticket office is closed on weekends, so you just pay the conductor onboard the train. A weekend pass from Naperville is $10.
Do be sure to RSVP here so we know to look for you. :-)
I apologize for the late notice, but my family has surprised me with a birthday outing for tomorrow (Nov. 3rd) and I won't be able to make the dueling train event.
I hate to miss the event, it was so much fun last year. I'll see everyone on Monday at GEPL if you attend. Thanks.
The final tally is in andwe have a major upset. Tthe Union Pacific line from Glen Ellyn squeaked a victory and will retain the trophy in 2018. The Union Pacific line averaged 1234 per writer, while the BNSF line from Downers Grove averaged 1204 words, so by only 30 words per writer, the Union Pacific line is once again the Dueling Trains winner.
Just in case it is important for anyone: we are no longer at Sawada; the music grew to be too loud, so we are now at the nearby Whole Foods Market (across the street from 26 North Halsted on Don Cornelius).

Slight adjustment. I'm going to get on at Winfield at 10:49. I will look for Leslie at the station!
The Glen Ellyn group will meet up in car # 6137 up top. The Winfield team is already there.
The Union Pacific team members:
Lisa Evans (L. Evans)
Dominique Murtagh (dmurtagh17)
Ellis Joens (Haberdashing)
Leslie (Leslie Hatch Gail)
Just in case it is important for anyone: we are no longer at Sawada; the music grew to be too loud, so we are now at the nearby Whole Foods Market (across the street from 26 North Halsted on Don Cornelius).
Final word count for the write-in on my end: 3267!
Sorry I couldn't stay until the end of the write-in, but had a great amount of fun!
I had lots of fun! Thanks to Sam and Jenny for organizing this event!
