My word count is very far behind. After the election I just completely lost my will to write or do much of anything else. Then it was my nephew's birthday so I missed all the write-ins over the weekend. I'm going to try to get back on it but I don't know if I will be able to catch up much less finish this year. I'm going to be out of town for Thanksgiving so I don't know if I will make it to any write-ins this weekend.
Hey, no fear! I'm super behind too, but the main point of NaNo is to just do it! As long as you get something done, you have that much more done than you would have if you didn't do anything! You're still at 14k words, and that's pretty impressive. (:
Any chance of making it to some write-ins this week?
Ha, I came to the forum to post something called "It's Not Going That Well."
I'm choosing to push on. I didn't win last year and I might not win this year, but I'm going to try. My story is turning out okay-- it's been way harder to go on when my story was going terribly, even when the word flowed.
Every word you write is on less word you have left to finish your book.
Nano is all about sprint writing. Another way to look at it is slow and steady. If you write 500 words a day 20 days a month you will write 10,000 words. If you do this for just 10 months in a year you will have written 100,000 words or 2 Nanos.
Either way you are getting words down, progressing on toward you goal.
Honestly I feel you the last week or so I've just been behind. I got close to catching up on Tuesday and thought I could make it up Wednesday but then fell behind again. Now I'm only at about a 300ish word deficit. It doesn't matter how far behind you are you can climb out of the pit. Think about it whats your best day three thousand words maybe. Yes you would need like six or seven more of those days but its not impossible especially if you get to a really good part or heck skip to a really good part. If you can't make it you still wrote more than if you hadn't and if you keep writing you still have more than if you gave up now.
This is the muddy middle, guys. The heady energy has worn off. Many of us are in the part of our story that's a bit slow, or maybe we've just fallen out of love with the idea. It's okay.
Too often, we hyper focus on word count. After all, it's the sole stated goal of NaNoWriMo. But if it's overwhelming, focus on other things. Focus on consistently getting your butt in the chair and your hands on the keyboard and writing something. Focus on allowing yourself to suck, i.e. turning off your inner editor. Focus on whatever it is you struggle with in your writing process. Whatever you're doing, it's progress. And that's what counts.
Hey, DJRM, I hear you about the election. The wonderful thing with writing is that you get to create your own world. What is this marvelous world that you are creating? Just get absorbed in that.
I'm not even at 5,000 words yet. I haven't made it to a single write-in. All of my time has been sucked into either my classes, or recovering from my classes, and they're dragging on for longer than I had anticipated.
But, you know what? I have 4,932 more words than I did in October. I have no idea how many words I will have by midnight on November 30th, but it will be more than what I started with. And this year, that's enough for me.

I am still far behind and there is no way I will make 50000 before the end of November. But I am not stopping and I think I will instead aim for 40000.
Just think how far you've come since you first posted. Great work. And think of how many people say they would like to write a novel and never put one word down on paper or a word processor. You have written far more in your NANO career than many ever will.

hey :D any word is better than no word! <3 Squid and I haven't even hit the 10k mark! LOL!
I'll be a story in your head. But that's OK:We're all stories, in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?

Good luck, and I'm right there with you.

You can do it!

Evil is not in the ends but in the means.
