Hello! I'd like to share two FREE weekend events that may interest you in helping you out with your research and writing process. If you have any characters in the military or you're writing about music or Native American culture, check these out!
In honor of Veteran's Day... Cyndee Schaffer discusses the role of women in the military and, in particular, her mothers WWII experiences as a WAC (Womens Army Corps) by taking you on a journey from inspiration to publication in her presentation about Mollies War. Using excerpts from Mollies letters written home, Cyndee provides a romantic yet frightful glimpse into the life of a woman in uniform during this crucial time in history. She traces the footsteps of the women serving in Europe followingher mother and her fellow WACs who were stationed in London before D-Day and during the German doodlebug attacks after D-Day. They were transferred to Normandy two months after D-Day, and then to Paris. Finally they were transferred to Frankfurt with the Army of Occupation and witnessed first-hand the devastation of the country.
Cyndee also discusses the writing adventure from working with her mother on her memoir and learning about the first women to serve in the military as she researched the topic and finally to finding a traditional publisher. Copies of Mollies War will be available for purchase and signing after the program.
In Honor of Native American Heritage Month... Throughout history, every culture used flutes and/or drums to express experiences, to conduct ceremonies, to tell stories and to unite their people. The oldest flute is about 40,000 years old and was made from a bird's bone. The Native Americans used the flute mainly for courting and for ceremonies. In recent years it has become a versatile instrument used for enjoyment by individuals and groups with and without accompaniment.
Something Different showcases the versatility of the Native American flute with music of the world. Original compositions include blues, ballads, Latin, Middle Eastern and other musical genres. As a solo instrument, it has a lovely haunting sound that research has shown to reduce stress and to promote relaxation. Sit back, relax, and enjoy our Musical Road Trip through the World of Music.
To register for a program, please click on the link included above or call the Helen Plum Library at 630.627.0316. These programs will be held in the Auditorium (lower level) at the Helen Plum Library located at 110 W. Maple Street, Lombard, IL.
