Write-ins are events where people go to a place to work on their novels. They bring their laptops, tablets or pen & paper notebooks and write individually. Sometimes (especially at the ones that the MLs are hosting in Naperville and Plainfield but also at some of the others such as Woodridge, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, etc.) there will be a facilitator who will run word wars and other motivational activities. Watch for individual threads on at least some of these. The full list of write-in events can be found at naperwrimo.org/events.
Usually it is okay to bring snacks and drinks, though there is now a DuPage County restriction for its libraries:any library in DuPage County requires all snacks to be pre-packaged. Nothing homemade or open can be brought to events to share, according to the county's health and safety laws.
Feel free to bring your stuffed animal writing mascot with you to a write-in! It's a Naperville tradition. :-)
Word wars are timed writing sprints. Everyone focuses for a set time (say 13, 17 or 21 minutes) and writes solidly on their novels. Sometimes there are little prizes (I have little space-themed sculptures this year and some space stones and some custom buttons) as an added incentive. There are variations like the Box of Doom where people draw from the Box a stick with a word count target they have to try to meet.
There are Huzzah Balls: each writer has a goal they want to accomplish during the write-in (a word count milestone, a character they want to kill off or a scene they want to write). If/when they succeed, they shout "Huzzah!" and everyone applauds their achievement.
Don't forget about the Library Crawl.See naperwrimo.org/crawl for more information. The brain child of Carol Stream librarian Sarah Kovac (sarahk06), the Library Crawl is in its third year. Sixteen regional libraries are participating. When you attend a write-in at the library, you can collect a Space Tour post card that you can later redeem for opportunities to win small prizes at the Thank Goodness It's Over (TGIO) party December 10th (top prize is a $100 Amazon gift card!). There are library write-ins almost every day in November.
And also don't forget to come to the All Day Write-in at the Naperville Municipal Center November 12th, 8 AM-3 PM (Saturday). Sam B (Basil Cliffside) and Kaden (silverwolf42) are the hosts for this annual favorite.
Finally, a note that the Barnes and Noble in Bolingbrook is available as a Come Write In space (no host or scheduled write-ins).Resources available: Wi-fi, Power outlets, Food and/or drink available for purchase, Space is accessible (no stairs, wide doorways and aisles, etc.), Free parking.Extra details: The Bolingbrook B&N also hosts a small local writing group twice monthly that offers warm-up exercises and short critiques (1-4 pages per person please). Contact kimstang if you have questions.
Can I...or others...use this thread to find out who is going to what write in..if lets say...we are unsure if the write in will have many people or not? It's a thread about the write-in's/library crawl....so it seems fitting...
I usually know that the nichols library write in's on sunday are pretty full of fun people...but I went to a write in my first year at the aurora library...with only 3 other people...an the batavia write in last year...had 5....and sometimes i debate "do i go to this write in?" but i go so i can get my crawl card for the TGIO party...I guess i'm just one of those "the more the merrier" people and i love meeting fellow writers...
I plan to go to the Batavia write in this saturday with my friend!!! Who else will be there?
I'll be a story in your head. But that's OK:We're all stories, in the end.Just make it a good one, eh?

Sure! That's a good idea.
Or some of the write-ins (like mine at Nichols) have or will have their own threads.

yeah....i figured i'd use this thread for some of those write in's that may not be big enough to warrant their own thread...because if it did and every write-in had their own thread...this forum would be packed too full lol!!!
so...Is anyone going to the batavia write-in today? I'd love to meet fellow writers!

You can host your own write-ins too. See the Guide to Hosting Write-ins. Write-ins events are posted on our calendar (see naperwrimo.org/events).
