About the Journey

Our region of Illinois::Naperville has a year-round writing group called the Journey. This group, first created in 2007 as the Pledge-to-Publish (and then later shortened to the Pledge) is intended to help people pursue their writing interests throughout the year and to allow us to continue our social circle through various events.

Each version of the Journey is different; at the start of the year (January) we meet to determine our goals for that year. And we work together to make those goals happen.

We have many possible goals that we can undertake as a group; and it isn't necessary for a Journey participant to sign onto every goal the group undertakes (think of it as a cafeteria selection).

  • Write, edit and self-publish a short story anthology (in 2009 we published Infinite Monkeys; in 2010 and 2011, we worked on and hope to finish two other short story anthologies)

  • edit our NaNo novels. Katherine hosted an editing workshop in 2011; and we can do more along this line.

  • hold our own writing workshops. In 2011 and 2010, I hosted workshops on finding your writing voice

  • go on a writer's retreat (we've talked about doing this but haven't yet made it happen)

  • organize social outings (e.g., meet for lunch, go to a movie and dinner, hold a picnic, go to the Wheaton College Wade Center)

  • meet weekly in the jabber room for chit chat, writing exercises, etc.

Everything is possible, though I should note that critiquing each other's novels did not work so well the one time we tried it (much better to get critiquing help through critiquecircle.com; we can, however, do short story critiquing).

If you are a past or current Journey member and are interested in rejoining or continuing on in 2012, please post in this thread. Especially note your candid opinions of how things went before and what ideas you have for 2012.

If you are new to the Journey and want to join, please post here; and also share your ideas of what you are interested in (don't feel bound by the list above).

Thanks! I know together, we will have a great 2012 Journey.

--Tim

P.S. We have rooms reserved at the Naperville Municipal Center for monthly meetings January through June (and another one in September):
January 14 - 11:45 - 2:00 p.m. - Meeting Room A
February 11 - 11:45 - 2:00 pm - Meeting Room A
March 10 - 11:45 - 2:00 pm - Lunchroom
April 14 - 11:45 - 2:00 pm - Meeting Room A
May 12 - 11:45 - 2:00 pm - Meeting Room A
June 9 - 11:45 - 2:00 pm - Lunchroom
Sept. 15 - 11:45 - 2:00 pm - Meeting Room A

Tim I want to join the Journey. I just finished my novel and would like to stay in contact with the Nano sight as it has helped me stay focused. I don't have goals other then to rewite and edit the book I just finished and to work on two more. I've started writing every morning and want to contuiue.

I've just sent out nanomail to all those on the list for whom I do not yet have your e-mail address and gmail address (if you have one).

I will shortly send out via e-mail further instructions to folks.

I have a potential path if others are interested--
Read at least one chapter in ten writing books. (Such as most of the free ebooks that we got for the Kindle) or other books that people either have, or can get from the library.

Some are still available free--and you don't have to own a Kindle to download an electronic copy of the book (have to read it on your computer, though)
http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/forums/usa-illinois-naperville/threads/47491

I was thinking that we could compete to see who gets the most chapters read (assuming that some of the books will be good enough to read the whole book), who reads them the fastest, share quotes from them, things that it sparks in our writing, etc.

Maybe Tim could even give us a way of 'keeping score.'

I just started 'Meet a Jerk...' this morning and the beginning is great. I know Hooked is fabulous, so we may have some good resources here and if we can find a way to make reading these books fun and a joint project, it gives another potential path for the Journey.

Remember, people can take different paths for the Journey, and can participate in more than one thing. My main focus will remain revising my novels, but I figure that having gotten all these great free ebooks in November, I'd like to at least look at each of them, and probably read and learn from several of them.

This is a fantastic idea, Katherine. I suggest you start a new thread for it; I think every Journey Path should have its own thread. Then people can post their findings to that thread.

In terms of keeping score, how about one Journey Point for each chapter read and shared. Each Journey Path can define its own point system; and I'll set up a place on the wiki where we can keep track of point totals. People with higher point totals are then more active in the Journey (which presumably will help them in their writing Journey).

--Tim

P.S. I'm working on creating a screencast of how to use the wiki, etc.

Just a quick update on the state of the Journey. Katherine (KatherineWriting) is leading several different groups through various novel editing efforts through coffee shop sessions and some planned online activities, including work through CritiqueCircle.

Ky (scrapacat) and Catherine (Cee-Bee) are kicking off an ambitious shared-city anthology called Seasons of Seifort.

Katherine (Squidish), Sarah (writingstudent), and Roger (Roger Lubeck) are leading a Day Before The End of The World anthology.

Other Journey paths, including a Poetry Path, are getting started.

We have 46 people signed up.

I'm all in for 2012, and open to all ideas. I especially like the idea of anthologies, although the group may be tired of that vein of work? We could always work on plot critters, etc., for the next nano, or more ways to torture ourselves at write ins.

I would like to also vote that, as we are novel writers, we focus more on editing/revising/preparing our novels for submission to agents. I don't have much interest in short stories. XD

The Journey is definitely defined by what its participants are interested in; however, in the past few years, we've just let people establish certain tracks (e.g., editing novels, preparing for publication; short story anthologies; social outings; jabber chat meetings with discussions and writing exercises, etc.) and let them vote with their feet (people can pick whichever tracks they want to participate in).

Interestingly, back in 2007, the Journey was the Pledge to Publish and all of the activities had a slant in that direction ;-)

I would love to join! Mainly to keep in touch with this great group of folks I have met in our region, but also to keep working on writing throughout the year. While I reached my word count goal, I am no where near finished with this book so anything to keep my feet to the fire is welcome. Outings sound great, workshops on character and plot development, etc.

I would love to join, but Saturday mornings don't work very well for me, as I always work from 6:30-1. If I could just do the online portion for awhile, until I find a new job (i've been looking for months), then sign me up. The editing is what I really need help with at the moment, but it would certainly be nice to be held accountable to writing after November.

Sure. We will strive to accommodate different schedules. The Naperville Municipal Center rooms are already reserved from 11:45-2 PM, but we will definitely have a significant online-only component and we will also try to schedule our social outings and some of the other events to meet people's schedule constraints.

Welcome!

This sounds like a great idea. We may be on opposite sides of a challenge at the moment, but I'd like more info on this. My Maryland group meets along the Rt. 270 corridor (Frederick, Germantown, Gaithersburg, Rockville, Bethesda) and we keep a year-round mailing list, meet regularly, and have grown in size over the years. However, the idea of setting goals and holding each other accountable to them is one that we should pursue.

Yes, it would be interesting to compare notes in the after-NaNo season.

KatherineWriting

I'm in, but I'm not inclined to do critiquing outside of something like critiquecircle.com. (I think we could use that site to get feedback from each other as well as other people in a timely manner. It might solve our ongoing issue of some people not getting enough critiques despite giving more than their share.)

I was also thinking about having a once a month Wednesday evening Caribou event that would focus on editing our novels. I'm happy to share what I do, and I the technique of sharing just the first paragraph of a chapter or two per session. This can give people good feedback without requiring that the reviewer spend hours or days reading rough drafts.

I am definitely interested in the Journey. I will finish my novel and edit it in 2012, and the supportive Naper Wri Mo community has been wonderful so far. It's good that there will be an online component to the Journey though, because the time slot will be difficult for me to make.

I be up for this. I need a way to get a kick in the pants to keep writing more of my series outside of Nano.
